- SUMMARY RESUME
Dr. Rita M. Lauria founded Metalaw®.US to develop a legal and consulting practice that would build upon her years of experience in media, communications, and the law. Her headquarters are in Los Angeles. She teaches New Media Law and other courses at the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School and has taught Cyberspace Law and Media Law at the University of La Verne College of Law.
Rita Lauria's broad experience enables her to offer an array of legal services that span several areas. She offers general counseling and representation on matters related to criminal law and cybercrime, internet, media, and communications law, intellectual property acquisition and protection, privacy, education, and business development. She represents media and technology interests, business interests seeking both national and international advice and counsel, and helps individuals with their family matters as related to co-habitation and pre-nuptial agreements.
Prior to founding Metalaw®.US, Rita Lauria served the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles as judicial clerk extern in Major Crimes. There she assisted the Honorable Kathleen Kennedy on death penalty and other complex capital cases, on Writs of Habeas Corpus, and on other major felonies and matters before the court.
Dr. Lauria builds her practice upon years of experience in media, communications, and the law. She was Advisor for Communications to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Communications, and Infrastructure of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). She served also as Associate Professor of Media Law, Ethics, and Emerging Technologies in the University of North Carolina system and was Director of the Global Virtual University there.
As Advisor for Communications to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Communications, and Infrastructure of the Federated States of Micronesia, Rita Lauria helped establish the laws, policies, and institutional framework for communications for a newly independent country transitioning in the aftermath of the United Nations Trust Territory (U.S. administration) to international recognition and sovereignty in international communications. She helped draft legislation, regulations, and agreements related to international and national communications and represented the Federated States of Micronesia as National Delegate in intergovernmental fora concerned with telecommunications. During her tenure in the FSM, the nation achieved national self-sufficiency in radiocommunications and eligibility for full membership into the United Nations, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the International Telecommunication Satellite Consortium (INTELSAT).
Rita Lauria has directed various experimental communications projects, including an international distance-learning project constituted as an international partnership between the state of North Carolina, its University, and several Japanese Prefectures (states), universities, and industry segments. This Global Virtual University project ultimately sparked reformulation of Japanese national education laws and regulations related to distance learning for credit and international exchange.
Metalaw®.US continues Rita Lauria's work at the frontier of media and communications science where she has investigated the impact of cyber and satellite communications upon legal regimes and other societal systems.
